Our Curriculum - Physical Education and Sport Program
At Birralee Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is an important component of the school experience. It encourages students to develop many skills in a vastly different learning environment to that of the conventional classroom.
Each week, every student at Birralee engages in a Physical Education lesson for 50 minutes. Students use an abundance of equipment and outdoor learning spaces to facilitate their growth and development of a vast array of skills and knowledge.
Within the Physical Education program, students are exposed to the importance of physical fitness, it’s impact on mental health and the development of healthy lifestyle habits. Students also develop their ability to work in a team environment and develop their resilience in competitive situations.
As students grow through the school, they will have the opportunity to compete in various sporting environments including a House Athletics carnival, House Cross-Country carnival and the Birralee Swimming Trials. These are all opportunities to work collectively with other students to earn points for their house while also working towards collaborative and individual achievement. Students who are successful in these events also get the opportunity to represent Birralee while competing with students from other schools within our District.
Within the Physical Education and Sport program, students will also have opportunities to be exposed to different sports and skills via the inclusion of sessions with external coaches and teachers. Clinics and programs that students may participate in include:
· Football (AFL)
· Basketball
· Tennis
· Gymnastics
· Yoga and Meditation
· Dance
· Many more
What Your Child Will Experience in Physical Education:
Our program follows the Victorian Curriculum and focuses on the following areas:
· Personal, Social and Community Health including:
o Being healthy safe and active
o Communicating and interacting for health and wellbeing
o Contributing to health and active communities
· Movement and Physical Activity
o Moving the body
o Understanding movement
o Learning through movement.
How Lessons Are Structured:
· Each lesson begins with clear goals so students know what they’re learning and why.
· Students then observe and discuss the skill as it is modelled by a teacher or a student.
· Students engage in a warmup activity linked to the skill.
· Students attempt the skill in a variety of settings such as: in-game scenarios or repetitive practice.
· Units of work often span several weeks to allow for deeper learning and skill-building.
· Reflection upon the goal of the lesson to discuss and reflect upon individual progress.
Our Physical Education Program aims to build confidence, resilience and teach students the importance of healthy choices and how they can positively influence all aspects of life.
